CLIMATE CHANGE

Cherokee’s sustainability objectives include a commitment to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and contribution to global climate change. At the corporate level, we rely on renewable energy. At the community level, our strategy includes targeting projects located in urban infill locations and sites adjacent to transit. We couple our project location choices with sustainable site design. These designs incorporate a mix of land uses, protect and integrate open spaces and are oriented for pedestrians. Moreover, in the past year, we have taken significant strides to learn more about and begin to apply green building technologies in our projects. Combined, these strategies have a profound effect on our ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the ecological footprint of our projects.

Over the past several years, we have partnered with a number of groups, both for-profit and nonprofit, that share our goals. We work with Sterling Planet, the nation’s largest provider of REC’s (Renewable Energy Credits), to offset 100 percent of our corporate offices’ electricity and other energy use with the purchase of Green-e certified, “new” wind energy. We have established a partnership with EPA Climate Leaders, where we are working to build a greenhouse gas inventory of and reduction plan for emissions associated with our projects. And, as a member of the Clinton Global Initiative, we make annual commitments in the Energy & Climate Change category.
