BROWNFIELDS

A brownfield is any abandoned, idle or underutilized real estate where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination.

According to the USEPA, there are between 450 thousand and one million brownfield (industrial and commercial) sites within the United States. The National Brownfield Association has estimated that the number could be as high as two million, with hundreds of thousands of those involving severe levels of contamination.
